The Ins and Outs of Family DNA Testing

Family DNA Testing

It is often said that nothing is as important as family. I sure know that I love my husband and kids, but I don’t really know much about both of our families past our grandparents.   Gone are the days when people had to depend on their older family members and family records to trace their family trees and family histories. While these traditional techniques of determining your ancestry and family trees still exist, advances in science and technology have resulted in even more accurate methods for genealogists.

DNA testing is one such genealogical tool, and its popularity is growing. I feel it would be a fun family experiment and see what we come up with. Right now we still have living parents so more opportunities to collect DNA samples.  According to MyFamilyDNATest.com, the big three DNA tests are AncestryDNA, FamilyTreeDNA, and 23AndMe.com.  Depending … Continue Reading

According to statistics from the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), bipolar disorder affects up to 5.7 million adults in the United States every year.

On the other hand, the Mental Health Research Association estimates that at least 2 million American adults suffer from bipolar disorder every year. These figures are indicative of the fact that bipolar disorder is quite common in the United States.

There are few statistics available on relationships in which there is a bipolar spouse. However, assuming that at least half of those diagnosed with bipolar disorder are in relationships, it would mean that there are at least 1 million people in bipolar relationships or marriages.

Well, my husband and I fall into the bipolar marriage category with me as the bipolar spouse.… Continue Reading

Vegan Pumpkin Soup With Thai Spices

Thai Vegan pumpkin soup

As the evenings get cooler, there’s nothing as comforting as a hot bowl of soup. Pumpkin makes a rich, creamy soup base which is complemented by touches of garlic, chili and ginger. Having a friend that loves food from Thailand I wanted to make something she would love. This Thai-inspired pumpkin soup combines fresh ingredients to create a rich, spicy flavor that will really warm you up.

The soup is surprisingly filling as a dinner meal and is also deceptively simple to prepare. No fussing around or wasted time cooling it so that you can put it through a blender: all you’ll need is your trusty potato masher! With just 15 minutes in preparation, you can put it all together and then put your feet up with a magazine and enjoy the rich Thai aromas while it cooks.

Note: this soup has a very spicy … Continue Reading

Review Of The Best Family Restaurants In Austin

Family Restaurants Austin

The only criteria I ever followed while choosing to dine out in a restaurant is the food quality – everything was secondary. However, of late I’m in a fix as some of the restaurants with real good food did not have enough space for my little ones to run around.

This might sound a little crazy to many of you but the truth is that when you have a family, their comfort takes precedence, even when it is such a small affair as eating in a restaurant.… Continue Reading

Fried Quinoa With Stir-Fry Mixed Vegetables Recipe

In the dark and cold winter months, a warm and hearty dinner is a real treat! One of my favorites is quinoa fried “rice.” It’s a healthy spin on your favorite Chinese takeout, ready in less time than it takes to get Chinese food delivery! It’s a real crowd-pleaser (even my non-vegan friends love it!), and it would be perfect for Chinese New Year celebrations  or just as a Friday-night staple. Once you try it, you will probably prefer it over your go-to Chinese takeout restaurant; it’s that good!… Continue Reading

Oktoberfest In Hill Country

There are countless reasons why I love Oktoberfest. I can’t get enough of the sweet music from polka bands not to mention the delicious sausages. For this reason each year I attend Fredericksburg Oktoberfest celebration for a taste of real fun. Among the festivals I have attended, I consider Fredericksburg Oktoberfest one of the best. There were many people but this did not hinder fun in any way. Pedestrian trails allowed easy movement of people, dance areas were very spacious and the sound was high quality for all the people to hear.

Happy Birthday, Little Monster

Alex baby

Time has gone by so quickly.

perseverance

My Little Monster, Alex Whitman, is 5 years old today.

She sure makes things exciting. She is active, loves to jump and do her “stunts” that scare others. She is curious about how things work and enjoys science, art, math and building activities. She has an excellent memory – I pulled out my iPad and gave it to her so she could play a game and she remembered exactly how, without hesitation – even though she hasn’t seen the iPad in over 4 months.

I remember her birth – the one she almost didn’t survive.
